Going through my classical music collection, I decided to play the CD Schubert: ‘Trout’ Quintet; String Trios D 581 & D 471 today as I worked in my home office.
This performance was recorded back in June 2005 at Potton Hall, Suffolk and was played by Leopold String Trio, Paul Lewis (piano) and Graham Mitchell (cello).
When I first acquired this CD, I was totally amazed by the sunny melodies.
Since I’ve been almost accustomed to the melancholic nature of the late piano sonatas by Schubert (1797 - 1828), this CD became quite a pleasant surprise.
As I read through the sleeve notes, I realized the piece was possibly composed by Schubert in his early twenties when he visited the town of Steyr in Upper Austria during the summer time. This probably explains why the melody is so wonderfully light and warm.
On the Hyperion web site, the track Scherzo: Presto, the third movement of the ‘Trout’ Quintet, is being featured as an audio sample. Check it out today!
